The tessellations created by each grid drawing are revealed by applying different techniques of greyscale shading.

Each drawing uses a shading logic particular to the grid used to create it. There is no hierarchy in the orthogonal grid, which simply alternates between light and dark grey along both axes; concentric tessellations in the polar grid become darker as radial gridlines converge towards the centre of the drawing; and the hexagonal cells created by the isometric grid have an offset, layered relationship to one another resulting in areas of the drawing where tessellations appear double-shaded, and other areas which become invisible where their centre - the convergence of six equilateral triangles - is obscured.
