MEng Masters in Engineering & Architectural Design Programme, UCL

Design Practice 3

Design Practice 3 (DP3) teaches integrated design in Year 4 of UCL’s Masters in Engineering & Architectural Design Programme, an innovative new interdisciplinary 4-year integrated masters delivered by The Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA) in partnership with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) and the UCL Institute of Environmental Design Engineering (IEDE).

DP3 is the fulcrum design module in the final year of the MEng EAD Programme through which students develop knowledge, skills and abilities in architectural, structural and environmental design synthesis. DP3 is taught in 8 unique design studios in parallel with DP2; this interdisciplinary vertical design studio approach enhances students’ ability to address complex design challenges in the built environment by bringing together linear practices of traditional science and non-linear practices of open design. Pedagogically innovative, these modules harness and evolve the design studio model to utilize engineering tools in the creative design process to augment design proposals with advanced fabrication facilities and engineering laboratories to put innovation, exploration and experimentation at the heart of the ‘design practice’ studio.
