Design Technology II
Design Technology is a companion module to Design in Years 2 and 3 of the Bartlett’s world-renowned 3-year BSc Architecture Programme. It is concerned with the multifarious ways in which architectural ideas are, and can be, made. An environmentally-framed practice, architecture’s physical manifestation as our third ‘skin’ - after the clothes we wear over our first (biological) skin - has impacts far beyond the limits of the buildings we imagine and the experiences we invent.
Technical design - at both strategic and detailed design levels - is integral to the design aims and ambitions of any architectural project. In Design Technology II in Year 2, students explore their project’s potential to respond to its site and context by addressing the technical requirements of their building’s design and construction and the many conditions of occupancy, all of which are issues of performance.
The Design Technology II module supports the development of Year 2 students’ main building projects with a technical lecture series and seminars, group and individual tutorials embedded into each design studio’s programme. From the outset of the module students think strategically and work iteratively to develop ideas through many different conditions of context; they are expected to employ a broad range of media from simple, hand-drawn sketches and diagrams to technical drawing and detailing, further progressing their work through techniques of physical and digital model-making so central to the development of architectural ideas. Over the course of the module students develop an awareness of the economic, professional and regulatory contexts in which architecture exists, together with an understanding of the potential political, ethical and environmental impacts of their decisions.
